While the US went through a severe recession from 1980-1982 and the stock market went nowhere in that period, 1982 marked the beginning of the greatest 20 year bull market in history.

A 2 year recession began in 2000, accompanied by a large drop in the stock market over that period.

The dot com stocks peaked in March 2000 and then plunged for the next 2+ years. The Nasdaq Composite lost over 70% of its value between March 2000 and Feb 2003.
